The glaring headlights from a rear vehicle pose a hazard for the driver and occupants. The bright light has the potential to temporarily blind the driver, which may result in an accident. Auto-dimming rearview mirrors are designed to prevent the problem.

The mirrors contain two sensors that are cameras or photodetectors. The sensors function in combination with a microprocessor. When a car approaches from the rear, the sensors detect the bright light. They send a signal to the microprocessor, which in turn sends a signal to electrochromic gel. The gel is encapsulated between two glass layers. When receiving the electronic signal, the gel darkens, which reduces the intensity of the light.
